Hello, I am Matt Pederson, CEO of MP3 Fitness. This is me in both of the pictures below. I was an active kid growing up, playing football, basketball, golf, and many other sports. But at some point, I realized that being active did not mean I was healthy. I had asthma and had a difficult time performing physical activities at a high level. At my heaviest I weighed 335 lbs.! I realized it was time for a change… On the right is me today…
After high school I moved to Folsom, CA and started focusing on my physical and mental health. I began to slowly educate myself around better nutritional habits. I also started to play basketball every day; all I needed was my iPod and I could pretend I was Kobe Bryant or Paul George for 20 minutes. That 20 minutes quickly turned into 3 hour pick-up games, multiple times a week. I was losing weight, but was still over 300 lbs. I realized that my current strategy was not sustainable with increasing work and school responsibilities. I focused on nutrition and found ways to motivate myself to eat a proper diet. After 18 months, I had lost 135 lbs.! I was eating exceptionally clean and living the healthiest lifestyle at any point in my life.
But it’s not all about weight…
After some blood work I realized that losing weight was just one part of my health journey. I had developed other health issues from being overweight for so many years. The most concerning issue was stretching and thickening of chambers and valves in the heart. Having hypertension and being overweight while drastically increasing my activity level for 18 months likely contributed to these heart complications.
I then turned my focus to learn more about Metabolic training, corrective exercise, Pilates and golf fitness. This was a great time to improve many postural imbalances I had developed while being overweight. In high school, I competed at a high level on the golf team for all 4 years. But now, I discovered how proper balance, fitness and flexibility could propel my golf game to a completely new level.
I have also never enjoyed running; this is not an ideal activity for overweight people. I remember my senior year in P.E. I couldn’t even jog 1/16 mile before having to stop and walk. Over the last few years I’ve began to enjoy running as I worked on my running gait to move with less pain. This past year I completed 3 Spartan races; the longest was 17 miles!
It has been extremely exciting to play the sports and activities that I would play growing up but with a “new body/mind”
Helping Others on their Fitness Journey
Looking back on my life after high school the biggest change for me has been my mindset and ability to learn/unlearn behaviors. I know how much my life has been changed through health and fitness and I am excited to continue to evolve as a person and help others on their own health and fitness ventures. On my own personal journey, I went through many phases. I started with drastic, sudden weight loss, but quickly shifted my focus to other health issues such as hypertension, fatty liver, high cholesterol, and various nutrient deficiencies.
I continued to educate myself deeper on these subjects both through school and certifications. National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and Precision Nutrition were my first certifications. While these significantly helped with my personal health journey, they also provided an opportunity for me to help other people achieve similar goals. I was able to work at Life Time Fitness for 2 years helping many clients achieve significant results while continuing to expand my education in the areas of corrective exercise , metabolic testing (smart cardio), golf fitness and Pilates.
While working at Life Time, I found passion in helping others as they try to make improvements in their own lives. I have gone through the journey that so many of my clients are on. I understand the challenges and can intimately relate to the struggle. But I also have a clear understanding of the benefits and how a healthier mind and body can be so transformational to so many aspects of people’s lives.
About MP3 Fitness
Working at a large commercial gym demonstrated to me that I genuinely enjoy helping others as they try to make improvements in their life. It also provided some fundamental building blocks on which I could develop my own fitness philosophies and methodologies.
I eventually left Lifetime and created my own company, MP3 Fitness to focus on not only clients exercise but also utilizing the time in between workouts to improve their health and fitness. This could be improving sleep and structured cardio to reduce cortisol to help lose body fat…
MP3 Fitness was built on the three pillars of fitness that I believe impact all my clients; Nutrition, Performance and Longevity.
Making sustainable changes to enable constant evaluation of your mind and body. Being able to find a way to be your best for as long as possible. I know how much my life has been changed through health and fitness and I am excited to continue to evolve as a person and help others on their own health and fitness ventures.
I hope you can see the value in looking at the holistic] aspect of fitness. It is not just about weight loss or eating better, but about addressing all aspects of health so you can live your best life. It is about eating better, feeling better, living longer, and enhancing the quality of your life. In short, it is about Nutrition, Performance AND Longevity.
I hope to have the opportunity to help you on this journey\ to live the best life possible
Thank you and have a healthy day!
Matt
